She’ll soon be visiting his ancestral village Pataudi in Haryana. ‘Yes, Kareena has been invited to Pataudi. It’d have been earlier, but it was too hot. Winter is when our family reunions happen every year. And Kareena is now part of the family. My parents are extremely fond of Kareena,’ Saif, who worked with her in ‘Tashan’, told IANS. Saif, who started dating Kareena after breaking up with ex-girlfriend Rosa Catalano, is quite happy with their relationship and says he is looking forward to marrying her. ‘This relationship is ‘IT’ for me. Today I feel very settled and very happy. Though a bit lonely. And when I’ve bad days, I feel I’m being ungrateful. I’m now looking forward to settling down with Kareena. Our marriage will happen very shortly as soon as we both have a little less work on hand and we can give the marriage quality time. Also, her family has to be ready for our marriage,’ he said. Dostana chemistry will be remembered:JohnAfter five flops in a row, John Abraham is finally back on the track with the success of Dostana. The hunky John is finally enjoying the success of his bare act in his latest flick and says that he has understood that his fans like to watch him in certain kind of roles. “I’ve realised the audience likes me in a certain way. They like to see me in a light-hearted film, so I will try and give them a mix of all to keep them entertained,” says the actor. And apart from his six-packs and yellow speedos, it is also his onscreen chemistry with Abhishek Bachchan that has generated a lot of buzz among his fans. “Abhishek will vouch for it that our chemistry we share on screen is rarely seen between two heroes in a long time and I feel - Sameer and Kunal - the characters in the film should live forever,” adds John. Katrina Kaif talks about spat between Salman and Shah RukhKatrina finally talks about spat between Salman and Shah Rukh Katrina Kaif has spoken about the fight between her boyfriend Salman Khan and mega-star Shah Rukh Khan. Talking to an Indian newspaper, the British babe says, “See, whatever happened was between the two of them. I wasn’t involved. Both have come out in the open and spoken about it to the media. But out at the end of the day, they’re senior professionals from the film industry and they have been around much longer than I have.” Katrina made this statement amidst rumours that she has signed up for a Yash Raj film opposite Shah Rukh Khan.

Make or break for England as Ishant returns Nov 19, 2008 at 16:58 | Updated Nov 19, 2008 at 21:51New Delhi: The equation couldn't be clearer ahead of the third one-dayer in Kanpur. India know a win will will keep them on course seal the series. England know another defeat will shatter their reputation as a worthy opponent. For England the job of bouncing back in the series just got tougher. Ishant Sharma has been declared fit after missing the first two games with an ankle injury. Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni welcomed the news. "As we have also seen in the Test matches, he is the kind of bowler who bowls with the same amount of effort even in his second, third spells." But while countering Ishant will feature prominently in England's team meeting, their biggest headache is how to tackle Yuvraj Singh. He has made two centuries in two games so far but his captain is urging him to not be satiated. Dhoni hopes the prolific bat of Yuvraj comes good once again. "We hope he does that because it will be a tremendous boost for the team as well as for his career. There are very few who have scored three centuries in three consecutive matches. Hopefully he can do it for us." The last time an international match was played at the Green Park stadium, India beat South Africa in the third Test on a pitch that came in for severe criticism from the ICC. The curator promises this will be a belter. "We have prepared a pitch ideal for one-day matches," says curator Shiv Kumar. "Toss is always important, but it also depends on the captain whether he wants to bat or bowl." England are pretty much in a make or break situation. Another defeat will leave them with the near impossible task of winning four matches in a row to win the series. It's an equation the team understands well. "We haven't been able to hit the ground running overhead, which is obviously what we intended to do. Of course it's never nice not to play any game. But I think everyone is the same and we want to get out there and just win this third game," says off-spinner Graeme Swann. After comprehensive victories at Indore and Rajkot, India would be hoping for an encore at Kanpur as it would place them in a commanding position in the series. England, on the other hand, need to find quick answers to the questions posed by Yuvraj Singh if they have to stay alive in the series. Dhoni wants hat-trick of tons from Yuvraj Kanpur: Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is confident that stylish batsman Yuvraj Singh would go on to complete his hat-trick of tons in the third ODI against England on Thursday. "I hope he scores his third consecutive century here and that would suit the team as well," Dhoni said after practice session at the Green Park Stadium on Wednesday. Yuvraj has been in murderous form against England, hitting a 78-ball 138 in Rajkot and slamming, following it up with a 118 in Indore, apart from four wickets as well. Dhoni doffed his hat at the Punjab batsman and said it was a pleasure to watch him on song. "On song, Yuvraj is simply one of the best, even the top bowlers struggle against him," Dhoni observed. "As a captain, I have noticed that all big players who slog down the order are left-handers, probably because the bowlers have sorted out the right-handers. They can bowl yorker or low full toss to a right-hander but struggle to find the right line for the left-handers. "Yuvraj really stands out for he is a strong-hitter and hits along the ground," Dhoni said. Asked what was his advice to Yuvraj, Dhoni quipped, "I tell him to see the ball, hit the ball. At times when a player goes through bad patch, you have to keep him motivated. But all the players in the team are very talented and you cannot really change their basics. All you can do is to motivate them," Dhoni said. India not yet the best team: BorderNov 19, 2008 at 23:43 | Updated Nov 20, 2008 at 00:21 Mumbai: Even as Australia start a new series, the loss against India continues to be in the headlines. Ricky Ponting has publicly lashed out at some former players who had questioned his tactics. One of those was former captains Allan Border defended his stand in an interview with CNN-IBN's chief cricket correspondent Roma Khanna. Allan Border: He (Ponting) will get over it very quickly. You move on. The next Test match is the most important one. Yes, there has been criticism of him by me and he has fought back at times. But that is part and parcel of the whole package. I am in commentary these days and I make observations and he is the Australian captain; so he has to expect a certain amount of flack from time to time. Roma Khanna: A lot has been said after India's 2-0 win that Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men is the No. 1 team now. But for someone who has seen cricket for so many decades, do you think India still needs more match winners? Allan Border: I think there is no doubt that Indian cricket is on the rise and we saw that in the recent series but i disagree with the comment that one Test series win means that India are No. 1. I think there has to be sustained performance over a period of time. That's why we have a ranking system, not everyone agrees though on how that's put together. India will need to play well at home and they also have to play well away from home. And that has been their Achilles' heel in recent times. Traditionally they have done well at home but they have struggled to win away from home. Australia deservedly hold the No. 1 ranking and still do, just. That's because they have been dominant at home and away. Roma Khanna: For someone like you, is it easy to watch the competition even out now after a decade of domination? Allan Border: One side of me is passionate and wants Australia to do well and the other side of me wants cricket to flourish. For that to happen, you need competition. Roma Khanna: Who are the match winners for India in the future? Allan Border: There are two areas. First is the opening batting which is very important because that sets the stage for rest of the innings. In Sehwag and Gambhir, India have two fantastic cricketers who compliment each other well, right-hander and left-hander, they are both aggressive by nature, particularly Sehwag, he is fantastic to watch and Gambhir is gaining confidence all the time. The Indian bowling is looking tremendous, I am so impressed with Ishant Sharma. I think he has been a wonderful find and his performances in Australia and recently in India have been top class. For a young man, he has learnt very quickly. So, India we are keeping an eye on you guys and hopefully in the next couple of years we can have some more good series.

MOGADISHU (Reuters) – An Indian warship blew up a pirate ship in the Gulf of Aden and gunmen from Somalia seized two more vessels, defying the foreign warships patrolling the seas off their anarchic country. Buccaneers have taken a Thai fishing boat, a Greek bulk carrier and a Hong Kong-flagged ship heading for Iran since Saturday's spectacular capture of a Saudi supertanker carrying $100 million of oil, the biggest ship hijacking in history. The White House said U.S. President George W. Bush had been briefed and the United States was consulting other U.N. Security Council members on ways to combat the wave of piracy. The supertanker Sirius Star was seized despite an existing effort to guard one of the world's busiest shipping arteries by naval ships from the United States, France, Russia and India. Saudi Arabia said the ship's owners were in talks over a possible ransom. Iran said it was seeking contact with the Hong Kong ship, which it had chartered to import grain. The explosion of piracy off Somalia this year has driven up insurance costs, made some shipping companies divert around South Africa and prompted an unprecedented military response from NATO, the European Union and others. "The pirates are sending out a message to the world that 'we can do what we want, we can think the unthinkable, do the unexpected'," Andrew Mwangura, coordinator of the East African Seafarers' Assistance Programme, told Reuters in Mombasa. India's navy said one of its warships destroyed a pirate ship in the Gulf of Aden in a brief battle late on Tuesday. "Fire broke out on the vessel and explosions were heard, possibly due to exploding ammunition that was stored on the vessel," the navy said, adding that two speedboats sped away. The International Maritime Bureau said pirates from Somalia had hijacked a Thai fishing boat with 16 crew. That followed the capture of the Hong Kong-flagged ship carrying grain to Iran. Mwangura's group said a Greek bulk carrier had also been seized, but an official at Greece's Merchant Marine Ministry said in Athens no such incident had been recorded. The sharp increase in attacks this year off Somalia has been fuelled by a growing Islamist insurgency onshore and the lure of multi-million-dollar ransoms. Somali Prime Minister Nur Hassan Hussein told Reuters naval patrols would not stop piracy and appealed for more help to tackle criminal networks with links beyond his country. Russian ambassador to NATO Dmitry Rogozin said NATO, the European Union and others should launch land operations against bases of Somali pirates in coordination with Russia. Analysts say paying ransoms exacerbates piracy, but like most victims the owners of the Sirius Star have begun talks. "We do not like to negotiate with either terrorists or hijackers. But the owners of the tanker, they are the final arbiters of what happens here," Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal said on Wednesday. The Sirius Star was seized 450 nautical miles southeast of Mombasa, far beyond the gangs' usual area of operations. It is believed to be now anchored near Eyl, a former Somali fishing village that has become a well-defended pirate base. TANKER SPOTTED "Eyl residents told me they could see the lights of a big ship far out at sea that seems to be the tanker," Aweys Ali, chairman of Somalia's Galkayo region, told Reuters by telephone. The Sirius was carrying as much as 2 million barrels of oil, more than a quarter of Saudi Arabia's daily exports, and had been heading for the United States via the Cape of Good Hope. The U.N. Security Council resolution that authorizes counterpiracy measures will expire on Dec. 2, according to U.S. officials who say they are pressing for an extension. But Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell said the problem required a larger international effort to bring stability and economic aid to poverty-stricken Somalia. "You could have all the navies in the world having all their ships out there, you know, it's not going to ever solve this problem. It requires a holistic approach," he told reporters. U.S. defence officials have also stressed the need for new measures on commercial ships, including armed guards. Some shipping firms are diverting their fleets via the Cape, experts say. There is little evidence yet big oil tanker firms carrying most of the world's crude are avoiding the Suez Canal. Somali gunmen are believed to be holding about a dozen ships and more than 200 hostages in the Eyl area. One Ukrainian vessel is loaded with 33 tanks and other weapons. Chinese state media said on Wednesday a Hong Kong cargo ship taken in September had been freed and all 25 crew were safe. Experts say pessimism over the prospects of any peace process in Somalia, memories of disastrous past interventions, and the need to put out fires elsewhere -- from Afghanistan to Congo -- have snuffed out the will to take further action. The pirates are armed with grenades, heavy machineguns and rocket-launchers, and foreign navies have usually steered clear of direct confrontation once ships have been hijacked, for fear of putting hostages at risk. APMaruti rolls out A-StarPosted: 2008-11-20 00:21:58+05:30 IST Updated: Nov 20, 2008 at 0021 hrs ISTMaruti Suzuki, India's largest passenger carmaker launched its much-awaited hatchback A-Star on Wednesday. The car is the company's fifth global model, which would be manufactured only in India. It is also the company's fifth launch in the A2 segment. Manufactured completely out of Maruti's Manesar facility, the company has set a target of selling 50,000 units in the domestic market. It also plans to export the car to 150 countries across Europe, Middle East, Latin America, Asia, Australia and Africa. Keeping the car's export target at 1-lakh units, the company will start exporting it to Europe first by early 2009. The company has set an export target of 2 lakh units by 2010-11. Factoring the economic downturn in the US and the European markets, RC Bhargava, chairman, Maruti Suzuki India said, “The scenario is very unpredictable at this point so it is difficult to arrive at any conclusions. The situation should become clearer in a couple of months. However, we expect to export at least 1,50,00 units.” With demand slowing across the world, companies like Hyundai Motors, which export hugely from India, have cut their export targets recently. The car, which comes in three variant is available at an introductory price ranging from Rs 3.47 lakh to Rs 4.12 lakh. Meanwhile, the company is also working on a car which will be conceived, designed and developed fully in India said IV Rao, managing executive officer, engineering, Maruti Suzuki India. Reacting to finance minister P Chidambaram’s call to auto industries to cut prices, Bhargava said that each company had to examine their cost structures and weigh the commodity prices before taking any cost reduction measures. “Even the impact of the reduced commodity prices takes a few months before the benefits start showing,” he said. Bhargava added that industry had restrained from increasing prices when the material costs had increased substantially. The company’s sales figure for the month of October showed a drop of 8% in sales as compared to the same month last year. Liquidity crunch, inflation and the negative sentiments in the market have taken a toll on the industry, which has been reporting lower sales numbers for the past few months. Responding to reports that the company will have to phase out its oldest model Maruti 800 due to stricter emission standards, by 2010, Rao said that the company is working to make the model Bharat Stage IV norms complaint. “There are ways of making the engine compliant... with stricter emission norms. Either you work on improving engine combustion or you put in a catalytic converter,” he said. As per the Auto Fuel Policy, the 13-mega cities, which have Bharat Stage III emission regulations, will meet Bharat Stage IV standards from April 2010 and the rest of the country will upgrade to Bharat Stage III regulations.... Ray of hope: 40,000 new jobs in IndiaThu, Nov 20, 2008 at 02:49New Delhi: What started in the US few months ago as a housing mortgage crisis has slowly engulfed the whole world into an economic meltdown. Jobs are also going at a fast rate but amongst all this chaos some companies have still announced their intent to hire more people.Big companies like Hewlett Packard, Goldman Sachs, DHL, Barclays Bank and American express have slashed jobs in the last two months. The latest cut of 50,000 jobs globally by Citigroup's is by far the largest but the bank says the impact in India will be minimal. But will India see layoffs in similar scale to the US & Europe? Human resource consultants say India is surely not isolated but there will be no mass lay offs in the country. “''Mid term and long term is fine. Offshoring will continue, so jobs will be created',” says Ma Foi Management Consultants Business Head Anil Kumar. 'We will say not job cuts but job growth may get impacted in hospitality and real estate, IT,” Anil Kumar adds. There are actually some sectors which are giving us a reason to cheer. A recent survey done by HR firm Ma Foi says public sector and government undertakings are going to be the saviours. No surprises, in just last one week, firms have unveiled plans of hiring some 40,000 people in the country. In finance sector, the State Bank of India (SBI) is set to hire 20,000 new hands, Bank of India to hire 10,000 people, private insurer MetLife India is looking to recruit about 2,000 managers and a whopping 30,000 advisors by March. In consultancy sector - Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu is looking to hire 3,500 employees, Accenture will hire 10,000 people. Even the Infotech companies - TCS and Infosys will hire 25000-30,000 people, TCS too will absorb 8-10,000 people. Big daddy of manufacturing sector - L&T plans to take 10,000 people and Maruti will hire 1,000 fresh hands. A global recession might slow down the Indian job market but it will end up creating some opportunities also.'Cut prices or people will hoard fearing worst' Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 07:44Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram had on Tuesday asked Indian companies to cut prices to boost demand and tide over the economic slowdown. "The classic response to a demand slowdown is to cut prices," Chidambaram had said at the India Economic Summit in New Delhi. However, many companies have ruled out a cut in the prices of their goods and services. So even with most of the developed world in the grip of recession and the rest of the world witnessing economic slowdown, Corporate India is openly disagreeing with the Finance Minister.Although they have turned down Chidambaram's request for price cuts, many wonder if price-cuts is really the only and best solution to beat slowdown?CNN-IBN’s show Face the Nation debated: Is price cut the best solution to beat a possible slowdown?

Love is the beauty of the soul "Love is a temporary madness. It erupts like an earthquake and then subsides. And when it subsides you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have become so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion. That is just being "in love" which any of us can convince ourselves we are. Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident. Your mother and I had it, we had roots that grew towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossom had fallen from our branches we found that we were one tree and not two."You Are The Music In My Life You are the music in my life, The song I sing when faced with strife. How we came together is unknown, For our sins we have fully atoned The melody echoes through my mind, Reminding me of our love, oh so devine! Moments together, stolen as they may, Is all we ask for when we pray. The chords that emphasize our love, Is music sent from somewhere up above. It transends eternity and fills our souls. Making us forget our sacred goals. The verses of such sweet refrain, mirrors our lives and will always remain. It subtly masks all of our inevitable pain. Lifting us up under the unbearable strain. You breathe upon my face, The touch of your lips leave no trace.. Facing a destined fall from grace.. Only in my heart it will never be erased. We shall nurture love's music as it whelms up in our hearts, Thanking Heaven everyday that we shall never be far apart. May the music, embedded in our souls, play on and on. Keeping the love of our lives forever strong. A love so beautiful can know no wrong Should one of us be taken from this earth before the other, One day in Heaven this love we'll rediscover. Until then our music we'll use, our grief to cover. For without our love the music would suddenly stop forever.. So today we make a vow to love one another 'till the twelvth of never. I'm going to speak the words I'm going to speak the words that my heart wants you to know I want you to see what you mean to me, and why I love you so No one else can know my thoughts ,and touch my soul like you can, No one can melt my heart like you do, simply by holding my hand. With a loving glance, or a tender kiss you make my cares disappear, warm thoughts of you surround me ,and always keep you near. I need nothing more from you than this, to know that you'll always be mine, to always have your love in my life, untill the end of time ~~Without You I'm Not Me~~ When you are not here, some thing's not quiet right. Its like the stars and moons, without the night! Its something strange, that i can't explain. It's like Tarzan, without Jane. It's like peanut butter, without jelly. It's like Santa Clause, without the belly. It's like a joke, that isn't funny. It's like Easter, without Bunny It's like a present, without a bow. It's like a planted seed, that doesn't grow. It's like a king, without any crown. It's like a circus, without a Clown It's like the birds, without the bees. without you, I,m just not me.

Lesbian marriages, born of a legal loophole, stir debate in India Winter is India's wedding season, a time of gold jewelry, dancing and loud music. But not for Raju and Mala. They are among three lesbian couples who have been making headlines lately by publicly declaring their relationships and calling themselves married. The law is silent on gay marriages, and same-sex couples are taking advantage of this loophole to perform marriage ceremonies and live together. However, they are vulnerable to arrest because homosexual sex is a crime punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Since the law against homosexual sex was enacted under British colonial rule in 1861, fewer than 50 people have been convicted, mainly because judges tend to be lenient and authorities are reluctant to stir sexual controversy. But India is deeply conservative on sexual matters. Heterosexual couples rarely kiss or cuddle in public. Gays in their daily lives face discrimination, ridicule, blackmail and persecution by police and government agencies, human rights campaigners say. Being openly lesbian is doubly hard in India, with its myriad caste and class distinctions. In fact it's difficult enough just to be a woman. Government estimates say a woman is raped every hour in India, a bride is set on fire in a dowry dispute every six hours and 80 per cent of illegally aborted fetuses are female. So Raju, 25, and Mala, 22, who use single names, showed stunning courage and eloped in December. Apart from the gender question, the couple also defied another ancient taboo; Raju is a Dalit - what used to be called an "untouchable" - while Mala belongs to a higher caste. Higher castes often shunned physical contact with the lowest castes in the past, and social intermingling is still not common. So a month before Mala was to marry a man, the two women fled their homes in Amritsar and secretly married at a Hindu ceremony in New Delhi. But when they declared their relationship, their families tried to have them arrested. The couple was detained and taken to court - which said they could live together because the law was silent on the issue. "Nobody can separate us. Not even death," Raju told reporters. "We have vowed to live together for the rest of our lives as husband and wife." A second couple emerged in the same month in the eastern state of Bihar, but was less lucky. Police arrested Pooja Singh, a widow with an 8-year-old son, and charged her with abducting her 19-year-old female partner, Sarita. Sarita, who uses a single name, was returned to her parents on a magistrate's orders. Singh is preparing her appeal to higher courts against the separation order. Within days a third case surfaced, in Aroor, Kerala, involving Venu and Mangala, married with two children. Mangala, 26, told Venu she had been involved throughout the 10-year marriage with another woman, Ramlath, 23. She said she would kill herself if the two women could not be together. So Venu, 40, took an unusual step - he married his wife's lover. Now they all live together. Ruth Vanita is a professor at the University of Montana who is publishing a book on same-sex marriages in India and the West. In an e-mail to The Associated Press, she said the striking feature about most Indian homosexual couples is that they are lower-middle class with no connection to any organized gay movement. Ranjana Kumari, head of the New Delhi-based Center for Social Research, says lesbian ties are more visible in India now, yet "still there is a total rejection in terms of social acceptance. ... It is only the socially accomplished people who tacitly convey their choice." Gay campaigners want a repeal of the law against homosexual sex, saying India should learn from Western countries that allow marital rights to same-sex couples. Vanita, the author, points to a centuries-old Indian tradition that has celebrated love in all forms in myth, folklore and literature. "I think that tradition will win out against the ignorant and heartless people everywhere who oppose the right to love," she said. Homosexuality in India is generally considered a taboo subject by both Indian civil society and the government. There are 2.5 million male homosexuals in India according to National Aids Control Organization (NACO) estimation.[1] Public discussion of homosexuality in India has been inhibited by the fact that sexuality in any form is rarely discussed openly. In recent years, however, attitudes towards homosexuality have shifted slightly. In particular, there have been more depictions and discussions of homosexuality in the Indian news media[2][3][4] and by Bollywood.[5] Religion has played a significant role in shaping Indian customs and traditions. While homosexuality has not been explicitly mentioned in the religious texts central to Hinduism, the largest religion in India, some interpretations have been viewed as condemning homosexuality.[6] Scholars differ in their views of the position of homosexuality within India's main religious traditions. There have been arguments that homosexuality was both prevalent and accepted in ancient Hindu society.[7] Sexual acts "against the order of nature" remain illegal in India, though the government no longer seeks to prosecute adults engaging in private consensual homosexual acts.[citation needed] In recent years, the campaign to decriminalize homosexuality has strengthened. Campaigners emphasize both human rights and health issues, particularly the need to disseminate information about HIV/AIDS.[citation needed] Several organizations like the Naz Foundation (India), National AIDS Control Organisation,[8] Law Commission of India[9], Union Health Ministry,[citation needed] National Human Rights Commission [10] and The Planning Commission of India[11] have either implicitly, or expressly come out in support of decriminalizing homosexuality in India, and pushed for tolerance and social equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered people. LGBT culture in India There is a vibrant gay nightlife in cities such as Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bangalore, including discos and nightclubs. The reports of harassment of homosexual individuals and gatherings by the police has seen a gradual decline since 2004.[20][21] Time Out (Delhi) has a dedicated column covering gay events in Delhi every week. Now with the emergence of several LGBT support groups across the nation, the much hidden queer community has increased access to health services and social events[3] In 2005, Prince Manavendra Singh Gohil from a conservative principality in the Gujarat state publicly came out as gay. He was quickly anointed by the Indian and the world media as the first openly gay royal. He was disinherited as an immediate reaction by the royal family, but they eventually reconciled. He has even appeared at an Oprah Winfrey show.[22] In 2008, Zoltan Parag, a competitor at the Mr. Gay International contest said that he was "scared" to return to India fearing discrimination. He said, "Indian media has exposed me so much that now when I call my friends back home, their parents do not let them talk to me".[23] On June 29, 2008, four Indian cities (Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata and Puducherry) celebrated gay pride parades. These were the first pride parades in Delhi, Bangalore and Puducherry. About 2000 people turned out in these nationwide parades. Mumbai held its pride march on August 16, 2008, with Bollywood actress Celina Jaitley also coming out to join in the festivities.[24] [25] The Internet has created a prolific gay cyber culture for the South Asian community. Gay dating websites provide an alternative way for meeting people; online communities also offer a safe and convenient environment for meeting gays all around India.[26] The blogsphere has also not been immune to the modern emergence of a queer desi identity. Web logs highlight stories and issues specific to this marginalized community.[citation needed]Advocacy for legalizing homosexuality The Naz Foundation (India), a New Delhi based NGO is at the forefront of the campaign to decriminalize homosexuality. It operates as a registered charitable trust and has been working on HIV/AIDS and sexual health related issues since 1994. Anjali Gopalan is the Founder of the organization, dedicated to the fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic and advocacy to legalize homosexuality in India. Anjali began working on issues related to HIV/AIDS and marginalized communities in the United States. On returning to India in the early 90’s, she was frustrated at the lack of government and social response to the burgeoning HIV epidemic. She founded Naz India to focus on communities stigmatized by the society. Through the years, Naz India has evolved and implemented a holistic approach to combat HIV, focusing on prevention as well as treatment. The organization also aims to sensitize the community to the prevalence of HIV, as well as highlight issues related to sexuality and sexual health. The organization has strong linkages with human rights groups and agencies such as Lawyers Collective, Human Right Law Network, Amnesty International, International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission. Naz India has collaborated with these agencies to address cases of sexual rights abuse. It works with the police services in New Delhi, conducting weekly training workshops for police personnel. The training aims to build awareness of HIV / AIDS and tackles issues of discrimination, physical harassment, corruption and human rights. Naz India’s efforts in sensitizing the government to different issues related to the epidemic include the amendment of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code commonly known as the ‘Anti-sodomy Law’. This act criminalizes same sex sexual behavior irrespective of the age and consent of the people involved, posing one of the most significant challenges in effective HIV/AIDS interventions with sexual minorities.[27] In December 2002 Naz India filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) to challenge IPC section 377 in the Delhi High Court.[28]International pressure The United Nations urged India to decriminalise homosexuality by saying it would help the fight against HIV/AIDS by allowing intervention programmes, much like the successful ones in China and Brazil. Jeffrey O'Malley, director of the United Nations Development Programme on HIV/AIDS, said countries protecting homosexuals from discrimination had better records of protecting them from getting infected by the diseases. [But] unfortunately in India, the rates of new infections among men who have sex with men continue to go up. Until we acknowledge these behaviours and work with people involved with these behaviours, we are not going to halt and reverse the HIV epidemic. Countries which protect men who have sex with men... have double the rate of coverage of HIV prevention services -- as much as 60 percent."[29] In talking to the The Hindu, he added that "The United Progressive Alliance government here is in a difficult position as far as amending Section 377 of the Constitution is concerned because of the coming elections as any changes could be misrepresented. We need to change the laws, sensitise the police and judiciary....But when discriminatory laws have been removed, marginalised people have got access to treatment and prevention facilities like condoms." Warning of the urgency he said, "India has achieved success in checking the spread of this dreaded disease through commercial sex workers but transmission through gay sex, and injectable-drug users is still an area of concern. Injectable-drug use can also be controlled through targeted interventions but is difficult to control or change people’s sexual habits."[30]Legal statusHomosexual relations are legally still a crime in India under an old British era statute dating from 1860 called Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code which criminalises 'carnal intercourse against the order of nature.' The vague nature of the legislation has resulted in it being used against a wide range sexual behaviour like oral sex (heterosexual and homosexual), sodomy, bestiality, etc.[citation needed] The punishment ranges from ten years to lifelong imprisonment. The relevant section reads: Whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal, shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable to fine.[31] None of the major Indian political parties have endorsed gay rights concerns into their official party manifesto or platform. However, one of the Politburo members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Brinda Karat, did write an open letter in 2003 to the then Minister of Law and Justice, Arun Jaitley, demanding a repeal of section 377, IPC.[32]Enforcement of the law and alleged human rights violations Convictions are extremely rare, and in the last twenty years there have been no convictions for homosexual relations in India. However, Human Rights Watch argue that the law has been used to harass HIV/AIDS prevention efforts, as well as sex workers, men who have sex with men, and other groups at risk of the disease.[33] The group documents arrests in Lucknow of 4 men in 2006 and another 4 in 2001. The People's Union for Civil Liberties has published two reports of the rights violations faced by sexual minorities[34] and, in particular, transsexuals (hijras and kothis) in India.[35]Demands for law reform In 2003, the Delhi High Court refused to consider a petition regarding the legality of the law, saying that the petitioners, a sexual health NGO called the Naz Foundation had no locus standi in the matter. Since nobody has been prosecuted in the recent past under this section it would perhaps seem unlikely that the section will be struck down as illegal by the Delhi High Court in the absence of a petitioner with standing. However, this does not rule out the possibility of some other High Court ruling on this section or even the Supreme Court in a "Public Interest Litigation" (PIL). Naz Foundation won its appeal in the Supreme Court against the decision of the High Court to dismiss the petition on technical grounds. The Supreme Court decided that Naz Foundation had the standing to file a PIL in this case and sent the case back to the Delhi High Court to reconsider on its merits.[36] The Delhi High Court has been reconsidering the petition since October 2006. There has been a significant intervention in the case by a Delhi-based coalition of LGBT, women's and human rights activists called 'Voices Against 377'. Voices has supported the demand to 'read down' section 377 to exclude adult consensual sex from within its purview.[37] In May 2008, the case came up for hearing in the Delhi High Court, but the Government was undecided on its position, with The Ministry of Home Affairs maintaining a contradictory position to that of The Ministry of Health on the issue of enforcement of Section 377 with respect to homosexuality.[38] The law continues to be on the books. It is used by some to threaten and blackmail homosexuals. It has been used in the past to harass people involved in condom distribution amongst homosexuals. It is also used by the police when registering complaints lodged by the parents of the parties involved. For instance, a lesbian couple that ran away together in Uttar Pradesh, India were arrested and handed back to their parents, in spite of both parties being of legal age by applying this section as the legal basis for their arrest. There is increasing demand from activists to decriminalize homosexual relationships. An impressive collection of academic articles and personal stories celebrating diverse sexuality is Because I have a Voice: Queer Politics in India, edited by Arvind Narrain and Gautam Bhan.[39] The book documents current struggles at personal and political levels. In September 2006, Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen and acclaimed writer Vikram Seth came together with scores of other prominent Indians in public life to publicly demand this change in the legal regime.[40] The open letter demands that 'In the name of humanity and of our Constitution, this cruel and discriminatory law should be struck down.' On June 29th, 2008, Delhi held its first ever gay pride march, along with similar gatherings in Bangalore and Calcutta.[41] On June 30, 2008, Indian labour minister Oscar Fernandes backed calls for decriminalization of consensual gay sex, and the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called for greater tolerance towards homosexuals.[42] On July 4, 2008, gay activists fighting for decriminalization of consensual homosexuality at the Delhi High Court got a shot in the arm when the court opined that there is nothing unusual in holding a gay rally, something which is common outside India.[43] On July 23, 2008, Bombay High Court Judge Bilal Nazki said that India's unnatural sex law should be reviewed.[44] On November 7, 200, the seven-year-old petition to disallow the law that makes “unnatural” sex a criminal offence finished hearings. The Indian Health Ministry supported this petition, while the Indian Home Ministry opposed such a move.[45]Legal aspect In 2008 Additional Solicitor General P P Malhotra said: "Homosexuality is a social vice and the state has the power to contain it. [Decrimilazing homosexuality] may create [a] breach of peace. If it is allowed then [the] evil of AIDS and HIV would further spread and harm the people. It would lead to a big health hazard and degrade moral values of society." A view similarly shared by the Home Ministry. He argued before the bench of the Delhi High Court that it was crucial to hold such unnatural behaviour as a criminal offence and its deletion would lead to moral degradation. Citing an Orissa court judgement, he also added that such behaviour resulted from a perverse mind that needed to be controlled.[46]Anbumani Ramadoss Indian health minister Anbumani Ramadoss advocated legalising homosexuality in India. On 9 August 2008, he campaigned for changing "Section 377" of the Indian penal code, which makes homosexuality and unnatural act and thus illegal. At the International AIDS Conference in Mexico city, he said, "Section 377 of IPC, which criminalizes men who have sex with men, must go."[1] His ministerial portfolio has put him at odds with the Indian Home ministry in seeking to scrap Section 377.[47] In late 2008, he changed his arguement saying he doesn not want the "scrapping" of Section 377 but a mere "modification" of the law treating homosexuality as a criminal offence punishable up to life imprisonment. He said he wants PM Manmohan Singh to resolve the matter, while he wanted to avoid discord with the home ministry, who said the altered law would then result in an increase in criminal incidences of sodomy or offences involving sexual abuse of children, particularly boys. In doing so he alleged that the law even penalises health workers for "abetting," while making this a cognizable and non-bailable offence. "The entire objective of getting homosexuality decriminalised is primarily to reach out to an estimated 4.5 million MSMs across the country as about 86 per cent HIV/AIDS-affected persons in India are ‘Men Having Sex with Men’ (MSM). My concern is purely on health grounds because Section 377 in its present form interferes with health ministry’s efforts to tackle HIV/AIDS epidemic, as even the doctors treating gay patients could be punished. Hence unless we take appropriate steps it would be difficult to contain the spread of the virus." He added the last comment saying the disease through blood transfusion and parentage declined while the other methods were hindering tackling the epidemic.[48]Recognition of same-sex couples There is no legal recognition of same-sex couples under Indian law. During a recent visit to India by the Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was asked by a journalist what he thought of the new law allowing gay marriage in Canada. His reply was that "there would not be much appreciation for a law like that in India," and he went on to talk about how they were culturally very different societies. The supreme Sikh religious body, the Akal Takht, has issued an edict condemning gay marriage and has told Sikhs living in Canada not to support or allow gay marriages in gurudwaras. In 2005, two unnamed women in Hyderabad asked the Darul Qaza, an Islamic court, for a fatwa allowing them to marry, but permission was denied with a rebuke from the chief qazi. None of the principal Christian denominations in India allow same-sex marriage. However, since 1987, when the national press carried the story of two policewomen who married each other by Hindu rites in central India,[49] the press has reported many same-sex marriages, all over the country, mostly between lower middle class young women in small towns and rural areas, who have no contact with any gay movement. Family reactions range from support to disapproval to violent persecution. While police generally harass such couples, Indian courts have uniformly upheld their right, as adults, to live with whomever they wish. In recent years, some of these couples have appeared on television as well. There have also been numerous joint suicides by same-sex couples, mostly female (male-female couples also resort to suicide or to elopement and religious marriage when their families oppose their unions). In "Same-Sex Love in India : Readings from Literature and History", author Ruth Vanita analyzes dozens of such marriages and suicides that have taken place over the last three decades, and explores their legal, religious, and historical aspects. She argues that many of the marriages can arguably be considered legally valid, as under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, any marriage between two Hindus performed according to the customs prevalent in the community of one of the two partners is legally valid. No license is required to marry, and most heterosexual Hindu marriages in India today are performed by religious rites alone, without a marriage license and are never registered with the state. State recognition is not sought by most couples because it confers few benefits. Most couples seek the validation of family and community, and several female couples in rural areas and small towns have received this validation.[50] There have also been a couple of high profile celebrity same-sex marriages, such as the civil union of designer Wendell Rodricks with his French partner, conducted under French law in Goa, India. LGBT rights organizations have demanded the right to same-sex marriage, and, inspired both by news from the West, have discussed the issue.[51]

Yes, dealing with headphone cords while on a treadmill can be a hassle. That’s a given. However, reaching behind your head and fumbling around for the next track button seems like it would look a bit odd and might even be dangerous. All things considered, Arriva’s CEO says the finished version will be 30-percent smaller and can be worn under the hair so as to hide the entire contraption altogether. So maybe instead of looking weird groping the Shuffle on the back of your head, it’ll just look like you have lice instead. I kid! Kudos to Arriva for the innovation here. It might be on to something, especially with the workout crowd. We’ll see in 5-6 weeks when the product begins shipping. However Aishwarya Rai was not present. It was at the same venue that the tsunami scenes of 'Dasavatharam' were shot by by K S Ravikumar and Kamal Haasan, a few months ago. The place has been guarded by security personnel. The details however have been kept under wraps. Shankar had earlier filmed a song sequence in Peru followed by some European countries. I'm beyond that stage where I have to party and be with 500 people to feel special. Every moment is special and I need no endorsement for it from the outside. Just being with the people who really matter to me is celebration enough," Sushmita told IANS.But why does she get tired of all her relationships? "You mean, do I dump the men? That's not true. Initially, everything is hunky-dory in a relationship. Then there has to be some dori (thread) to hold hunky guy in our relationship. If not, then move on."Talking about marriage, she said: "Marriage hasn't happened. It will happen when it happens. What guarantee is there that after getting into marriage and after 20 years of togetherness, I won't discover it was the wrong move for me?"Right now she is in Goa with her birthday entourage, which consisted of 17 very close family members and friends, including, of course, daughter Renee who at the moment occupies centre stage in Sushmita's life. One of the highest points of Sushmita's life this year and a good way to bring in her birthday was the Fun Fearless Female award, which she got alongside Shah Rukh Khan in Cosmopolitan magazine's first awards in India. "I like being perceived as fun and fearless because that's the way I am. It was a kind of lifetime achievement before my birthday. A little premature, don't you think?"But seriously, what made the award so special was that my daughter Renee was there to see her mother get this award. This was the first time she ever attended an awards function where her mother got an award. It felt wonderful to see Renee looking so proud of me."Sushmita saw Madhur Bhandarkar's "Fashion" and fell for it. "I'd say some of it is definitely authentic. I've been a part of that world. And I know it's not easy to maintain your equilibrium. What really blew my mind were the performances of Priyanka Chopra, Kangana Ranaut and the new girl (Mugdha Godse). This is one film I'd have liked to be part of."Talk veers to Dev Anand, who turned 84 recently. "I'm inspired by his zest for life. And more than that his dignity. He deserves all the adulation. Extremely charming. I don't know whether I'll live that long. But if I do I want to be as charming as Dev saab. But it's impossible for me to go on that long. I'm on fast-burn all the time. As long as I live my life to the hilt I'm fine."The actress is currently busy with "Rani Laxmibai" which is being produced by her production house Tantra Productions.Akshay has really grown as an actor: Salman Khan Mumbai, Bollywood star Salman Khan seems to be quite impressed with his colleague Akshay Kumar's growth as an actor over the years. I think he (Akshay) is the only actor who has really grown as an actor."Salman was speaking to reporters Monday at the promotional event of his forthcoming release "Yuvvraaj", which also stars Anil Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Zayed Khan.About the film, he said: "It is about brothers played by Anil, Zayed and me. The film is about the manipulations of the brothers to get the ancestral property. I play the second brother Deven, who tries to get a part of his ancestral property to fulfill the conditions laid down by his to-be father-in-law to marry his daughter (Katrina Kaif)."Salman has teamed up with director-producer Subhash Ghai for the first time for the film. He said that Ghai had approached him earlier too.Abu Salem's comments don't affect me: Monica BediNew Delhi, Her closeness to Rahul Mahajan on reality TV show "Bigg Boss" had reportedly unnerved her ex-beau Abu Salem, but actress Monica Bedi is unfazed. She says his comments and reactions don't make any difference to her. "Monica Bedi is out of her past. Abu's (Salem) reactions to anything won't affect me and they are never going to come in the way of my career," Monica told IANS over phone from Mumbai."My past is my past. I will never go back to it. I respect Abu and the relationship we shared, but I have left it behind. It's been a long time now. For me it is all over and I'm ready to start life afresh," she said.Monica had told her "Big Boss" housemates that she is not married to Salem. But the jailed mobster had apparently taken offence and had issued a notice to her, claiming that she is still his legal wife. He said that they had got married in a mosque in Los Angeles in November 2000.Though Monica did roles in movies like "Jodi No.1", "Jaanam Samjha Karo" and "Pyaar, Ishq Aur Mohabbat" in her short-lived Bollywood career, she shot to limelight when her affair with Salem became public. She was arrested with the underworld crimelord in Portugal and they were extradited together in 2005.After months in jail, Monica made a comeback of sorts with her surprise entry on "Bigg Boss" with an aim "to start life afresh".During her stint on the show, Rahul Mahajan, son of late Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pramod Mahajan, made romantic advances towards Monica on several occasions, but she used to walk away to avoid "unnecessary speculation in the media". But now she appreciates "his love"."Rahul has a 'bacha' (child) in him, he is very patient and doesn't get irritated quickly. I really like these qualities about him and respect his feelings for me. He is slightly mad, but not bad," Monica said. After being voted out of the show in the third week itself, Monica made a wild card entry in the eighth week. She was hesitant in reciprocating Rahul's advances when she returned on the show because of his closeness with actress Payal Rohatgi - something that she saw on screen after her first eviction."When I saw Rahul and Payal from outside, I was very confused about his feelings for me. I didn't want to come in between them. Then I confirmed thrice with Payal. She told me that they are just friends and have no future together as she is very focussed towards her career," Monica said. Now Monica shares a close friendship with Rahul, but says it's too early to talk about commitment and marriage."I couldn't commit to him on the show. I need time. Things might change when he comes out because I'll get to know the real Rahul only then. Besides, I want to work right now and re-establish myself in the industry."I have no marriage plans for the next two-three years and whatever it is, my parents will decide my future this time. I will definitely not go against them," she said.Monica says that her stint in "Bigg Boss" has transformed her from being "shy and reserved" to a "more talkative and confident" person."This show has really helped me change people's image about me and in getting work in the industry once again," she said. The actress already has Lady Luck smiling on her. She has signed one film and will be working on two reality shows very soon, but she refused to give the details of the projects.People around Rakhi Sawant behind our breakup, says ex-boyfriendMumbai, Abhishek Awasthi, known as Rakhi Sawant's boyfriend, is in no mood to compromise this time after their recent breakup and blames people around her for the situation. "They were doing it (instigating) all the time. People enjoy breaking up relationships, not building them," Abhishek told IANS.Early this year too they broke up, but then Abhishek patched up with Rakhi at the time. However, this time he is no mood to compromise."In love you shouldn't compromise beyond a point. The more you compromise the more you're mistreated," said Abhishek. But he refused to say anything against his ex-girlfriend."She has been with me for three years, given me some golden moments that will remain with me for my lifetime. Those three years will remain precious to me."Yes, the last two months have been unfortunate. I was totally misunderstood. I was doing a daily soap and I had no time to attend to her calls. Anyway my first serial Tony & Deya Singh's 'Jugni Chali Jalandhar' is getting a very good response."Excerpts:Q: Why this bitter parting?A: Destiny. It was very harsh. Whatever happens happens for the best.Q: Why is Rakhi so bitter?A: I've no idea what's in her mind. There's a communication gap between us. She's doing her own thing. I'm also busy trying to make my own career. I want to devote all my time to work so that I can make some progress. Yes, there were complications between us. We weren't talking much lately. I wasn't giving her time. I wish she had confidence in me and not listened to loose talk about my character.Q: But you must've done something to hurt her?A: No nothing. I've never done anything to hurt her.Q: Do you now resent being known as Rakhi Sawant's boyfriend?A: Yes, to a great extent I am known as her boyfriend. But my work lately has proved I'm not just someone's boyfriend. I am Abhishek Awasthi.Q: Whenever we saw you, it was only with her.A: I've supported her a lot. I was like a wall between her and the world. No one could reach her without crossing me.Q: Were you also working as her manager?A: No, never. She has a manager to handle her work. But I was there to make sure no harm was done to her.Q: She says she doesn't want to say anything because families are involved?A: She's saying this after saying it all. If it comes to speaking out I could also say a lot of things. I don't need to clear my name. She has been with me for three years, given me some golden moments that will remain with me for my lifetime.Q: Do you think someone has instigated her against you?A: Oh yes. They were doing it all the time. People enjoy breaking up relationships, not building them.Q: When did you part?A: A month back. Now I stay in my own flat in Malad.Q: Hurt?A: Ummmm. I'm very happy to be alone. Really.Q: You've split a number of times and come together again. How do we take you seriously this time?A: Not a number of times. A few times. And I took the help of media last time (at Valentine's Day). I wanted to set an example for other couples who have differences and who have a chance of patching up. I also wanted to show the world how much I loved Rakhi. People turned that into a joke. And the damage done then was more to my family than me. That's why I'm keeping quiet now. I don't want to talk about this any more.Q: What is the lesson that you've learnt?A: In love you shouldn't compromise beyond a point. The more you compromise the more you're mistreated.Q: Any regrets?A: Regrets for what? Those three years will remain precious to me. Yes, the last two months have been unfortunate. I was totally misunderstood. I was doing a daily soap and I had no time to attend to her calls. Anyway my first serial Tony & Deya Singh's "Jugni Chali Jalandhar" is getting a very good response.Q: Afraid to step into the world without Rakhi Sawant?A: Look, if I wasn't talented I wouldn't have got any work. But if you don’t think the asking price of $21 (Rs 1,050 approx) isn’t justified for a hand warmer, maybe its function as a wrist rest will convince you. Just in case you do really want to get these cute hand warmers click on the Web link below. Web link: Gadget4allSharp’s AQUOS photo player prints and displays images on your HDTV Sharp’s all new photo player doubles up as a photo printer and a photo displayer. Users can load up images via a variety of memory card slots, Bluetooth, Infrared and even the local network (HN-PP150 only), and from there, they can either print or output the content through HDMI. For those who connect it to an AQUOS LCD TV, they can also utilise the music playback functionality. The non-DLNA-compatible HN-PP100 (pictured) will go for Yen 20,000 (Rs 10,300 approx) starting December 5th in Japan, while the network-friendly HN-PP150 tacks on another Yen 5,000 (Rs 2,600 approx) and ships in January 2009.Japanese watch lets you communicate in morse code Japan-based Eikowatch is selling a watch with a small built-in flashlight enabling users to transmit messages in Morse code. The “Sector Compass Torch” quartz watch is unfortunately only for Japan and will cost around $620 (Rs 30,900 approx). The flashlight is attached to the lower right of the watch and can be activated at the push of a button. To make things sure, Eikowatch listed the entire international Morse code on the dial. The watch is made of PVD-covered stainless steel, water-resistant to a depth of 50 meters, 48mm in diameter and available in black or silveUSB 3.0 specs finalised USB 3.0 now officially dubbed SuperSpeed USB has its full specs for all to see on the USB Web site. The transfer speeds will go up to 4.8Gbps which means it’ll dump a 25GB HD file in about 70 seconds. The architecture has also been beefed up with extra data lanes to make for more sustained, rather than bursty transfer speeds, making it better for camcorders. It will even delivers more power than USB 2.0 to charge gadgets faster. More info after the jump. Source: Gizmodo Web Link: USB The one bad bit of news is that your old USB cables won’t deliver SuperSpeeds—you’ll have to get USB 3.0 gear from end-to-end to get the ridiculous transfer rates because the cables have extra pins for data, it is however all backward compatible. On the cable front you’ve got three plugs: Standard A (which looks like the one you know and love), standard B (the square one), mini B (which looks like a bizarre double-headed monster) and micro. We should start seeing the first USB 3.0-equipped gadgets sometime in 2010. Calling all engineers: Web cam for an eye Tanya Vlach, a girl with just one eye, has asked DIYers to build her an eye with a Web cam built in. The specs required for her project are put up on her blog… see the Web link. So if you are an engineering student looking for a muse for your next project, here it is. More information on this project as it develops.Wii officially imported in to India… Wii has officially been imported in to India and it’s available for Rs 22,900 at Croma no less. No idea if it’s available all over the place. But do check in and post if you have seen it somewhere. The Wii is the US version but the price is fail as the same console is available at an estimated street price of Rs 17,000. But if you still want an official one, pick it up from Croma or any other retailer selling it. Also do check out our link to a step by step Homebrew enabler that lets you play DVDs, music and old console games on your Video game technology help surgeons operate on beating hearts Surgery has been done inside some adults’ hearts while the heart is still beating, avoiding the need to open the chest, stop the heart and put patients on cardiopulmonary bypass. But to perform intricate beating-heart operations in babies with congenital heart disease or do beating-heart complex repairs in adults, surgeons need fast, highly sophisticated real-time imaging that allows them to see depth. Cardiac surgeons from Children’s Hospital Boston have reported good results with a simple technology borrowed from the gaming industry: stereo glasses. The researchers, led by Pedro del Nido and Nikolay Vasilyev of Children’s department of cardiac surgery, had already been testing a three-dimensional ultrasound imaging system. But although the images are 3D and displayed in real time, they give little indication of depth. In animal tests, surgeons trying to navigate surgical tools inside the heart became disoriented when guided by these images. Del Nido, chief of cardiac surgery at Children’s, realised that what they needed was stereoscopic vision. Watching the flat picture on the computer screen was like watching a baseball game on TV, he says. “It’s good enough to follow what’s happening in the game, but you could never grab a ball in mid-flight,” del Nido explains. So collaborator Robert Howe of Harvard University plucked a solution from video games: splitting computer images in two and cocking them at slightly different angles. When wearing gamers’ flickering glasses, users can see ultrasound images of the beating heart as a hologram. “You definitely have depth perception,” says Vasilyev. “You feel like you’re inside the heart chamber.” Vasilyev tested the glasses while operating on pigs with an atrial septal defect, a common form of congenital heart disease in which there is a hole in the wall dividing the heart’s upper chambers. Vasilyev closed each defect using a catheter carrying a tiny patch, threaded into the heart through a vein. Using another device, he fastened the patch around the hole with tiny anchors. In all, he placed 64 anchors: 32 under standard 3D ultrasound guidance, and 32 using the stereoscopic vision display. Using the stereoscopic display, Vasilyev was able to place the anchors 44 percent faster than with the standard display (9.7 versus 17.2 seconds). The tip of the anchoring device also navigated more accurately — deviation from the ideal path averaged 3.8 millimeters, as compared with 6.1 millimeters, a 38 percent improvement. The accuracy of anchor placement didn’t differ significantly between the two sets of tests, perhaps because of Vasilyev’s high level of experience and the availability of tactile information to help guide the final step of driving in the anchors. However, the speed of the anchor placement improved significantly. The researchers believe that the ability to precisely navigate tools inside the beating heart will minimize risk to neighboring heart structures. Clinical trials of beating-heart surgery with the patching system could begin in children with ASDs this year, Vasilyev says. Del Nido believes that stereoscopic imaging — coupled with recent advances in catheter-based surgical tools — will eventually allow surgeons to do much more complex operations on beating hearts, such as closing more complicated holes, shaving away excess tissue or repairing fast-moving structures like mitral or aortic valve leaflets. “We look at some very unusual cardiac anatomy,” he says. “Half the battle is figuring out what the structure is without opening up the heart.” For children, being able to do beating-heart surgery is a real advantage, del Nido adds. The large incisions can scar the heart and disrupt its rhythm, occasionally requiring a pacemaker. Opening the heart invites infection, and air bubbles can slip into the bloodstream and damage the brain. Running blood through a bypass machine can sometimes launch an inflammatory response, damaging organs throughout the body. And even in uncomplicated open-heart surgeries, recovery times are weeks to months. Alison Carroll is the brand new Lara Croft model A 23-year-old receptionist from the London will be the new model for Lara Croft and she isn’t just another pretty face.
