Breaking News: India beat Australia to win Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2-0 Published on Nov 10, 2008 by Pranav | 176 Views | Sports, Cricket, Indian Cricket Team, India | 0 Comments

India beat Australia by 172 runs on the fifth day of the fourth Test in Nagpur to win the series 2-0 and clinch the Border Gavaskar Trophy.Harbhajan Singh took the last Australian wicket when he trapped Mitchell Johnson (11) plumb in front of the wicket to bowl out Australia for 209 runs in their second innings.
This is the first time that India have beaten Australia 2-0 in a Test series since 1980.
Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni handed captaincy reins to Sourav Ganguly for the last wicket and it was on this date eight years ago that Ganguly was made Indian captain.
Harbhajan took his third wicket when Brett Lee (0) gave debutant M Vijay a simple catch at forward short leg.
Amit Mishra took his third wicket when he had Jason Krejza (4) stumped by Dhoni.
Harbhajan took his second wicket when he dismissed Shane Watson (9) to reduce Australia to 178/7.
Watson tried to cut, from too close to his body and edged for Dhoni to take the catch gleefully.
Earlier, Australia lost three wickets in four overs as Amit Mishra dismissed Brad Haddin to reduce the visitors to 161/6.
Sachin Tendulkar took his 100th catch in Test cricket when he caught Haddin (4) at mid-on to give Mishra his second wicket.
Earlier, Harbhajan dismissed danger man Matthew Hayden (77) in the next over after Mishra accounted for Michael Hussey (19) to reduce Australia to 154/5.
Harbhajan trapped Hayden plumb in front of the wicket, who went too much across the stumps to make room for the shot but missed the ball. Hayden hit eight four and a six in his knock and was threatening to take the match away from India.
Mishra struck in his first over, when he pitched the ball on the seam that bounced a little more and that was enough to take the edge off Hussey's bat and thankfully, Rahul Dravid took a simple catch at first slip.
Hayden hit his 29th Test fifty in the first over after lunch. Hayden reached his half-century, his 8th against India, when he hit a Virender Sehwag delivery against the spin to mid-wicket for his fifth four.
At the end of the first session, Australia needed 271 more runs to square the series. The session was notable for some sloppy fielding and catching by the Indians.
Hayden was dropped twice, both off Harbhajan Singh. Dravid continued to have a wretched series, dropping Hayden on 36 when the Australian opener reverse swept and top edged. The catch was easy by Dravid's standards.
Ishant Sharma reduced Australia to 82/3 when he dismissed Michael Clarke (22). Ishant took his 15th wicket in this series when he had Clarke caught behind by captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni with a superb outswinger that shaped away just a little after drawing Clarke into the shot.
Hayden was also dropped on 30 before this in Harbhajan's first over. Hayden was looking to cut, edged it but Dhoni couldn't hold on to a tough chance.
Australia were reduced to 37/2 losing captain Ricky Ponting and opener Simon Katich early. In the seventh over of the Australian second innings, Ponting drove to mid-off and went for a quick single, but Amit Mishra came in quickly and dived forward to hit the stumps to run him out.
In the over before that, Ishant got India the first breakthrough when he dismissed Simon Katich to reduce Australia to 29/1. Katich (16) looked to hit across the line, mistimed it high up in the air for Dhoni to take the catch.
Australia finished Day 4 on 13/0 after bowling out India for 295 in their second innings.
